Twenty years ago I compiled with Aaron Gillette an annotated bibliography of the Space Shuttle program entitled Toward a History of the Space Shuttle. We intended it as a starting point for serious historical investigation into the program’s history. At that time few serious studies had been published in the history of the Space Shuttle and this reference was intended as a way of helping to jump start investigations.
The NASA History Program has just released an updating of that earlier bibliography, Toward a History of the Space Shuttle: An Annotated Bibliography Part 2, 1992–2011, compiled by Malinda K. Goodrich, Alice R. Buchalter, and Patrick M. Miller of the Federal Research Division at the Library of Congress. This volume includes key articles, books, hearings, and U.S. government publications published on the Space Shuttle between 1992 and the end of the Shuttle program in 2011.
The material is arranged according to theme, including: general works, precursors to the Shuttle, the decision to build the Space Shuttle, its design and development, operations, and management of the Space Shuttle program. Other topics covered include: the Challenger and Columbia accidents, as well as the use of the Space Shuttle in building and servicing the Hubble Space Telescope and the International Space Station; science on the Space Shuttle; commercial and military uses of the Space Shuttle; and the Space Shuttle’s role in international relations, including its use in connection with the Soviet Mir space station. This volume also includes juvenile literature on the Shuttle, as well as information about the Shuttle astronauts, memoirs about the Shuttle, and the end of the Space Shuttle program. A glossary of NASA abbreviations is included as well.
